Graduate Assistantship - Greenhouse Care
Detailed Duties and Responsibilities
1) Plant care and propagation: 1.5 hours daily, Monday-Friday, meetings for guidance arranged with Ms. Gerry Misquith, Greenhouse Facilitaro, at her discretion.
Watering, feeding, pruning, weeding, propagation, pest management, repotting of root-bound plants
· Determining and maintaining settings and ranges for environmental control equipment and properly operating such greenhouse equipment
· Test and evaluate growth media (e.g. for pH and soluble salts) and apply to plant specimens as required
· Properly evaluate plant specimens (scouting for and identifying insects, disease and weed infestation) and apply the accurate principles of pest management to maintain the health of the plants
· Maintain detailed and accurate management and experimental records as required
· Keep the greenhouse facility clean and sanitary (e.g. free from plant debris, fungi and mold)
2) Preparing plant specimens for classroom use: 2.5 hours/week, interface at least once per week with members of the Biology Greenhouse Committee for directions and guidance
· Grow and treat plants experimentally as directed for use in Biology classes
· Aid in preparing plant specimens and associated equipment for use by students
· Help to identify and permanently label plants (scientific names and taxonomic family) that currently exist or are new to the greenhouse
· Provide ideas as requested in order to affect the most effective educational design and modality for implementation of student lab experiences, experiments and projects.
