Student Affairs Sustainability Graduate Assistant

The Office of Dining Services in the Division of Student Affairs at WCU is seeking applicants for the position of Student Affairs Sustainability Graduate Assistant. This will be a 20 hours per week position for the 2021-22 Academic Year and will focus on a) the management and growth of a WCU Sustainability Peer Educators program and b) Sustainability Efforts in Campus Dining. The goal of the Sustainability Peer Educators program is to empower undergraduate students interested in sustainability to educate their peers on topics that include, but are not limited to: the challenges society faces in environmental, social justice, and economic sustainability; practices students can employ that promote sustainable living; and current WCU sustainability initiatives and how students can get involved in these efforts and/or create their own projects. The goal of the Sustainable Campus Dining efforts is to reduce food waste and energy and resources consumption in WCU’s dining services.


WCU Sustainability Peer Educators Program
  • Working with Student Affairs, the Office of Sustainability, and the Sustainability Council, implement a sustainability peer education program targeted primarily, but not exclusively, at students living in on-campus residential facilities.
·        Provide a training program for student employees in August.
  • Meet with student employees, both as a group and individually, on a regular basis.
  • Assist and supervise student employees in facilitating events and activities.
  • Monitor program budget and recommend changes for subsequent years.
  • Work with student employees/volunteers to develop and implement marketing for specific events and the program overall.
  • Recruit student employees for the following year.
  • Prepare assessment tools and an evaluation report at the end of the year.
 
Sustainability Efforts in Campus Dining
·        Support the WCU Dining Auxiliary, WCU’s contract dining provider, and student organizations in maintaining a Food Recovery Program on campus.
·        Provide assistance with the collection and analysis of information related to dining for programs such as AASHE Starts, etc.
·        Support, as appropriate, the various committees of the Sustainability Council in efforts related to the dining program, such as sustainable food systems, nutrition, sustainable food policies, etc.
·        In conjunction with the contract dining provider and appropriate University staff, monitor efforts to reduce waste through composting, recycling and waste reduction and make recommendations for improvements as appropriate.
