Athletic Academic Mentoring Program Graduate Assistant (multiple positions)

The Athletic Academic Mentoring Program (AMP) exists to provide a service to student-athletes who may be at-risk academically, or are deemed to be in need of services to help to navigate academics at the college level. Graduate level mentors will meet with student-athletes to assist them in both utilizing existing university resources and also to monitor their academic progression throughout the semester. Ideally, all issues and concerns that may hinder academic progress will be addressed during the semester so that these student-athletes are in the best position to succeed.

Academic mentors are graduate-level student staff of the Athletics Department, who meet with student-athletes in the program once per week following an academic mentoring protocol. The mentors do not serve as academic advisors, but rather focus on ways to improve academics, time management, navigating college, and how to advocate. The mentors maintain contact with coaches and professors in order to gain an understanding of each student-athlete's academic situation.

The Graduate Athletic Mentor Role and Responsibilities will include:
·        Weekly meetings with student athletes to monitor academic progress and discuss campus resources and services as needed
·        Supervise weekly athletic study hall
·        Work with the Learning Assistance Resource Center (LARC) to assist student athletes with obtaining tutoring as needed
·        Communicate with faculty (as needed) to obtain ongoing updates on academic progress of student athletes and discuss helpful strategies as needed
·        Provide written/verbal weekly updates to coaches on the academic progress of their student athletes
·        Attend weekly meetings with Academic Coordinator/Supervisor to discuss academic progress of student athletes
·        Connect students with campus resources to assist with academic, and personal well-being.

Several opportunities exist for Academic Mentors (graduate assistants)
  • part-time (3, 6, 9, credits per semester equating to 5, 10 and 15 working hours on campus)
  • full-time (12 credits per semester equating to 20 hours on campus)
  • All positions receive a stipend based on number of credits
