Graduate Assistant for Sykes Student Union

The Graduate Assistant for Sykes Student Staffing will assist the Associate Director of Sykes Student Union with the hiring, training, and scheduling of student staff. They will also manage opportunities for staff development, team building, and recognition. 

BENEFITS 

  • 9 credit tuition waiver per semester
  • $5000/semester stipend

DETAILS 

  • 10-month contract August- May (first day of classes to last day of classes)
  • Must be available to plan for and attend staff training in August and January the week before classes ($13/hour compensation offered in addition to stipend for work outside of the 10-month contract).
  • 20 hours per week
  • Weekday hours will be set based on availability.
  • May be asked to "flex schedule" to support evening or weekend events as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

Hiring

  • Facilitate the hiring process for student staff positions within Sykes Union.
  • Assist the Associate Director with organizing job applications as they are received, vetting applicants and recommending candidates for interviews.
  • Coordinate and conduct interviews of job applicants individually and/or by soliciting a hiring committee of professional staff and students, as appropriate.
  • Maintain strong communication with all applicants throughout the hiring process.

Training 

  • Assist with planning and facilitating of student staff training in August and January before classes begin.

Staffing

  • Assist Student Staff Supervisors with staff scheduling and monitoring timesheets for attendance and tardiness.
  • Enforce all policies and procedures relating to staffing, the union, and the University.

Recognition

  • Plan staff social events and recognition programs to motivate and connect staff with the help of the Building Manager Lead Team member.

Assessment

  • Collect data for use in departmental assessment projects
  • Write reports based on data collection
  • Contribute to writing the department's annual report

Administration 

  • Attend all departmental staff meetings and work group meetings as assigned
  • Attend Division of Student Affairs meetings.
  • Attend all training, orientations, new staff programs, and workshops as appropriate.
  • Volunteer on Division of Student Affairs committees that pertain to career interests and professional development goals.

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Acceptance into a West Chester University Graduate Program is required.
  • Student leadership or student employment experience in a university setting is required.
  • Interest and enthusiasm in working with college students required.
  • Previous experience planning small and/or large-scale events in preferred.
  • Enrollment in the M.S: Higher Education Policy Student Affairs program is preferred.
  • Excellent organizational, administrative, and planning skills/experience.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people.
  • Technology skills include Microsoft Office (Outlook, Teams, Excel, etc.), Handshake, Canva, and Qualtrics is preferred.
