
Graduate Assistant Success Coach
Success Coaches are graduate assistants that work in the Office of Success Coaching through the Learning Assistance and Resource Center (LARC) at West Chester University (WCU). Success Coaches provide individualized support to guide clients toward academic and personal success at WCU. Success Coaches provide support to both undergraduate and graduate clients and are available to meet with clients virtually and in-person.
Success Coaches provide critical university outreach via email, text and phone to students who are referred to Success Coaching via cases in the Navigate platform by faculty and staff for attendance and academic concerns. Success Coaches encourage these students to schedule a Success Coach meeting to find solutions to get back on track.
Key Responsibilities include helping clients with: time management, test preparation, effective study techniques, note taking, active reading, goal setting, self-care and much more.
Communication Skills:
- Strong written (email) and verbal communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships
- Excellent listening and empathy skills
- Ability to build rapport and trust with clients
Coaching:
- Provide guidance, support, and encouragement to clients throughout their academic journey
- Monitor client progress through maintaining case notes
Goal Setting:
- Collaborate with clients to define their short-term and long-term academic, personal and social goals
- Develop realistic and effective action plans to achieve those goals
- Help clients identify potential challenges and develop strategies to overcome them
Organization & Time Management:
- Help clients develop organizational strategies, improve time management, and learn prioritization skills
Resource Navigation:
- Connect clients with campus resources
Success Coaches engage in regular bi-weekly meetings with their supervisor (Success Coach Lead) and the Success Coaching Team for training and skill development.
Center Hours of Operation:
Sunday (Virtual) : 2-6pm
Monday- Thursday: 10am- 6pm
Friday: 10am- 2pm
Qualifications:
- Enrollment in a WCU graduate degree-seeking program (Master’s level).
- Preference for first-year graduate students enrolled in one of the following programs:
- Psychology
- Counselor Education
- Education
- Higher Education Policy and Student Affairs
- Social Work
- Eligibility for a graduate assistantship as determined by the Graduate School (refer to the Graduate School information on the WCU website).
- A minimum GPA of 3.0 or above.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills, with the ability to teach these skills to others.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with diverse students.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Teams, Outlook, and related tools.
- Availability to attend bi-weekly staff meetings.
